Mobile Montessori (Rantek Inc.) builds educational apps guided by Manel Wickremasinghe, an AMI-certified Montessori teacher with 40 years in the classroom. The rule was simple and unusual for kids' software: no distracting animation, no gamified rewards, calm sounds, and interfaces that behave like the physical Montessori materials they're based on.
As co-creator from 2009 I designed every screen of the catalogue across math (Pink Tower, Hundred Board, fractions, arithmetic charts), language (Movable Alphabet in print, D'Nealian and cursive, letter reversals, rhyming), geography (continents, land and water forms, countries and flags) and science (planets, parts of plants and animals, the human body). Plus the flagship Montessori Classroom app that bundles 1,000+ activities behind one subscription, and the store listings for iOS, Google Play and Amazon.
Designing for a four-year-old is the hardest usability test there is. Touch targets, reading-free navigation, and the discipline to leave things out are habits I now bring to every client app.
